On the Estimation of Longevity Using Parametric Models

The Cox PH model is the most common method of analyzing prognostic factors in clinical data. The model allows estimate and make inference about the parameters without assuming any distribution for the survival time. However, when the proportional hazards assumption is not tenable, these models will not be suitable. In this study, we introduced derived longevity model (DLM) from nonparametric using parametric models, in which specific probability distribution is assumed for the survival times. This study centered on DLMs using parametric based survival function models and discussions of findings from combined data of universities academic retirees from two premier universities in Western Nigeria. Estimated mean of post retirement years for universities academic retirees from DLMs using Exponential, Weibull and Gompertz models without the effect of explanatory variables are 22.66, 22.35 and 22.08 years. However, DLMs with the effect of explanatory variables are 22.78, 22.82 and 22.48 years respectively. We recommend DLM using Weibull models for reliability, maintainability and safety (RMS) work as parametric model.
